Coleoptera : Curculionidae, Ceutorhynchinae) by M.G. Morris. 130 blz. 5 kleurenplaten. Whole-insect figures by R. Read. Determinatiewerk.

The True weevils 2 RES Handbook covers the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae. It features illustrated identification keys for tribes, genera and species.

Species notes include characters for distinguishing the sexes, plus information on biology, larval food plants, distribution within Britain and Ireland and geographic range. The author has also indicated which species have current ‘Red Data Book’ or ‘Notable’ status.

True weevils (family Curculionidae) are a huge group of beetle species, many of which are common and widespread. They occur in a wide range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. Many weevils possess a rostrum, clubbed antennae and a bilobed 3rd tarsomere. Overall there are around 500 species of true weevil in the UK.

The Ceutorhynchinae is one of the largest UK subfamilies. As a group these weevils are straightforward to distinguish, as the rostrum is generally twice as long as wide. All species feed on plants, both as larvae and adults, with a wide range of host plants. A small number of species are agricultural pests, particularly of brassica crops. Very few are arboreal and none feed on dead wood.
