Beschrijving

This work forms a part of the general revision of the Palaearctic moths and covers the subfamily Myrmecozelinae. These steppe, grass, and detritophagous moths constitute an independent group of lepidopterous insects, which have adapted to life in arid conditions. The larvae live in silken tunnels, sometimes in anthills, termitaria, or nests of bumblebees (Bombus). They feed on decomposing plant residue, mycelia of lower fungi, and sometimes mould-covered bodies of insects, especially in old ant colonies. The monograph presents a complete review of these moths from the USSR and adjacent territories. A total of 95 species is examined, of which 40 constitute the first record for the fauna of the USSR; 25 new species are described. The book is in 2 parts: introduction and taxonomy. The introduction gives information on the morphology, evolution, biology and world distribution of the group. The taxonomic part gives characteristics of the subfamily and lower taxa, keys to the identification of genera and species, and detailed descriptions of all species.
